Welcome to the Jack, Joseph & Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences! We’re looking forward to seeing you at Orientation on August 17-19. Our goal to ensure the best start possible to your graduate career and your development into a Change Agent.

You should have already received information about Orientation, your Pre-Orientation Checklist, and how to register for classes. If you haven’t, or if you’re not sure about your registration status, please contact Admissions at 216.368.1655 or email MandelSchool@case.edu.

Below is additional information, and you can always feel free to contact me directly with any remaining questions. See you soon!

This year, we are working to strengthen our sense of community by welcoming all incoming Mandel School Master’s students together. Due to the size of the combined group, we will be holding most orientation events at the Linsalata Alumni Center (11310 Juniper Road) in the Foster-Castele Great Hall.

It is a quick walk from the our other two buildings, which will also be used for some orientation sessions: Mandel School (11235 Bellflower Road, on the corner of Ford and Bellflower) and Mandel Community Studies Center (11402 Bellflower Road, across the street from L’Albatros restaurant). Please see the Orientation Map for more information about orientation venues, parking and important campus locations. Please note that Bellflower Court is a walkway, not a street.

There are a number of garages near the Mandel School. Please see the Orientation Map for recommended places to park, as well as rates. There are metered spots on Bellflower Road; however, these spots allow a maximum of 4 hours and are very closely patrolled.

During the school year, students can register for parking and the RTA/Bus system is available through Access Services, if you have not already requested a pass through the orientation registration process.

The Dean and faculty were excited to announce a common reading for this coming school year: Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance. We ask you to obtain your own copy of Hillbilly Elegy and read it before Orientation.  At New Student Orientation, you will receive a $15.00 gift certificate to Amazon to help defray the cost.
After you register for classes, you will learn which books you need to purchase. You can visit the bookstore for new, used, and rental books during the time you are here for orientation. You may also use online booksellers as well.
Are you seeing some terms you don’t understand? These definitions may help:

  • Canvas: Used at many colleges, Canvas serves as the communication between you, your classmates and professors. It generally includes links to syllabi, course readings, assignments, grades, class rosters, multimedia homework, etc. Use Canvas to communicate with other students in your classes on message boards or through email. Canvas serves the same purpose that the Blackboard system had in the past, and was introduced campus-wide at CWRU in the last school year.
  • Student Information System (SIS): A comprehensive website that includes your registration, class schedule, unofficial transcript information and all pertinent personal and academic data. It also includes links to financial aid, the bookstore and more.
  • Mandel School: This refers generally to the entire school, as well as to the main school building on the corner of 11235 Bellflower Road, which houses most faculty offices, most classrooms, Student Services, Noble Commons (the big lobby area), the Harris Library, the Dean’s office, Financial Aid/Admissions, and the Research Commons.
  • Mandel Center: This refers to the Mandel Community Studies Center at 11402 Bellflower Road. It houses some classrooms, large meeting rooms, and two of our research centers — the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development (or the Poverty Center) and the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education (or the Begun Center). Faculty who direct these research centers have their offices in that building.
  • MSASS: A shortcut for our name! Years ago it was just SASS, which is, well, really sassy!
Our University Circle neighborhood (which encompases CWRU and the many museums) and Uptown (the Euclid Avenue area) has a lot of great options. Check out this list.
After you are accepted at the Mandel School, you will want to review the procedures below to apply for student loans listed on your financial aid award. If you have any questions regarding the financial aid application process, please contact Matt Colver in Mandel School Admissions at 216.368.1108 or via email at matthew.colver@case.edu.

  • Complete your FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov. Make sure you fill out the FAFSA using the Mandel School Federal School Code: E00084.
  • Next, complete your internal financial aid Application found at financialaid.case.edu. A CWRU Network ID is required to access this site, which you will be provided upon admission.
  • Once the financial aid applications have been completed, you will receive an award letter that specifies your gross award amounts. (Note: This award letter will be emailed to your CWRU email account.)
  • To accept your financial aid awards offered in your Financial Aid Award letter, you must log into My Financial Aid through Case Western Reserve’s Student Information System. You will also need to complete external Documents through the Department of Education. You will need to Complete Entrance Counseling, and sign Master Promissory Notes at studentloans.gov.
  • If you have other sources of financial aid such as VA Benefits, or if you are receiving Employer Reimbursement please consult the Mandel School Office of Financial Aid for assistance.

If you choose a lender not on the CWRU preferred lender list, please email faloans@case.edu.

This helpful guide for new graduate and professional students provides a technology immersion for learning and research at Case Western Reserve University.

Want to learn more about classes? Check out the course descriptions.

For traditional two-year MSSA students, the Mandel School’s flexibility allows you to use your first year to explore the possibilities of the degree and the social work profession through your foundation and generalist classes. You will then formally declare your degree specialization at the end of your first year, and your second year will focus on that specialization while you continue to be immersed in a leadership-based curriculum that will provide you the skills needed to advance your career.
