This non-partisan policy instutute "conducts research on issues related to population aging
and provides information to the public, the press, policymakers, and the academic community."
Research is focused on issues such as income and health security. The site provides the full-text

National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice
Operated by Policy Research, Inc., in Delmar, NY in partnership with the Council of Juvenile
Correctional Administrators (CJCA) the Center was established in July 2001 to assist the field
in developing improved policies and programs for youth with mental health disorders in contact with

National Center on Elder Abuse
(NCEA)
The site provides an extensive summary of the term "elder abuse" and its many contexts, as
well as information on elder abuse statistics, state phone numbers for reporting abuse, and a list
of publications. There is also a link to the
Clearinghouse on Abuse
and Neglect of the Elderly (CANE), which provides annotated bibliographies on specific
abuse-related topics for free and also has a database to search their holdings. NCEA also maintains

National Center on Family Group Decision Making (FGDM)
A Program of the American Humane Association. Using the Family Group Decision Making
philosophy (family conferencing -- a one-time meeting where families and their relatives make plans
for the well-being of their children) allows families to become more involved with the child
welfare agencies that make decisions. The FGDM concept empowers families to develop a workable plan
that protects and nurtures their children, rather than professionals setting up a plan for the
family that may not work. The
FGDM Center offers services to support this philosophy such as training, technical

This Center focuses on child welfare issues related to management and operations,

This organization, through collaboration with the Children's Bureau of DHHS, provides
training and technical assistance to publicly administered and supported child welfare agencies. At
first glance the web site seems a bit sparse; but, if you click on
Resources, then the link to
Publications, you will get full-text reports on foster care and independent
living. The
State by State section provides facts organized by each state and included is

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information
A service of SAMHSA, and now called PREVLINE, this government organization provides
information and services related to substance abuse issues including alcohol abuse, illicit drug

behaviors on the part of young people by focusing on positive models. Material is included for a
variety of audiences including policy-makers, researchers, youth service professionals, students

Informative web source tht provides current domestic violence statistics, including abuse in

National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH)
The NCH is a national advocacy network of homeless persons, activists, and others committed
to ending homelessness through public education, policy advocacy, and grassroots organizations. Its
site provides information on
Legislation and Policy including advocacy efforts, existing and pending laws, and
government committees with jurisdiction over homeless and housing programs.
Facts About Homelessness includes fact sheets on various aspects of homelessness.
Each sheet summarizes facts and issues and contains a list of recommended reading for further

The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization dedicated to
serving the lawmakers and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. The

National Council on the Aging (NCOA)
NCOA is a coalition of organizations and individuals devoted to promoting the dignity,
self-determination and well-being of older persons. It pioneered such programs as "Meals on Wheels"
and "Foster Grandparents." The
Advocacy section highlights pending legislation related to older persons and
provides policy updates and links to other organizations. You can also do a search of the site by
keyword. There are also some very good publications on this site including research reports which

National Institute of Justice (NIJ)
The NIJ is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice
and is dedicated to researching crime control and justice issues. NIJ provides objective,
independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice,
particularly at the state and local levels. NIJ's principal authorities are derived from the
Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended (see 42 USC ยง 3721-3723) and Title

The work of NIDA is focused on research related to the health aspects of drug abuse and
addiction. Its website serves to disseminate that research to a wider audience than just the
