Statistics provide an interpretation of data that has been collected and analyzed. Statistics
are made available either in print or electronic format by both governmental and non-governmental
organizations.
The following information will provide a starting point for finding statistics in books, journal
articles and on the web. In addition, you will find links to agencies and associations in both the
Government Information and Pathfinders sections of this website that may lead you to data in
specific subject areas.
Finding Books with Statistics
To find statistical sources using the Case online library catalog, do a
keyword search combining terms related to your topic
with the word
statistics. (For example: alcoholism statistics, Hispanic statistics, substance abuse
statistics, etc.)
Or do a subject search using
Library of Congress subject headings
using one of the following formats (Subject heading followed by the word "statistics").

Case/OhioLINK Statistical Databases
The following two statistical databases are available to Case and OhioLINK affiliates. They can
be used to find statistics on a range of topics at the international, national and state level.
Matter of Fact
This database can be accessed through the Case or OhioLINK Research Databases list. It
provides citations for newsletter and journal articles that focus on statistical information
relating to social, economic, political, health and environmental issues. Some of the records in
this database link to corresponding Web sites that provide additional information.
Statistical Universe
This database can be accessed through Lexis Nexis on the Case or OhioLINK Research Databases
list. It provides three options for obtaining statistical information:
Power Tables (allows you to do a keyword search and to limit by time period and
region; you are then taken to statistics matching your criteria);
Abstracts (leads you to descriptions of statistical studies or reports; only a
limited number of abstracts link to the full text of the document);
Links (takes you to other Web sites that focus on statistics).

This publication of the United Nations Development Programme provides comparative data for
174 countries in such areas as demographics, crime, gender gaps in employment and education,

Regional/Local Websites
Local statistics are usually much more difficult to locate than those on the national level.
Agencies may collect data on programs they manage or populations they serve, but unless that data
needs to be reported to a government or licensing body, it will not often be published in a form
that is easily accessible. The following selected sources provide access to some Cleveland area
statistics.
CANDO Databases
The Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development (formerly The Center on Urban
Poverty and Social Change) of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences has created the
Cleveland Area Network on Data and Organizing (CANDO) database to provide data at
the neighborhood level for Cleveland and surrounding suburbs in Cuyahoga County. Statistics for the
following areas are included: population and housing census data, economic data, vital statistics,
