Computer Lab Log-In, Use, & Log-Out

The lab computers are set up for individual user accounts. You are required to log on to the Microsoft Network before using a lab computer so that your account can be activated. The lab technician on duty is available to assist first time users with the logon procedure. Please remember to log out before leaving the computer.

First Time Users

In order to log on to the Lab computers for the first time the following two items are required.

  1. Your User ID:  Also called: User Name. This is the combination of letters and numbers in your e-mail address that comes before the "@" symbol. For example if your e-mail address is zzz2@case.edu then your User ID is zzz2.

  2. A Password:  The password does not have to be the same password you use for e-mail. It is recommended that the password contains at least 5 alphanumeric characters.

If you have never logged on to the lab computers before you will need to talk to a Lab Technician.

Log-On Procedure

To log-on to the Lab computers follow these steps:

  1. Get to the logon screen . When you sit down at the computer you should see one of three screens:
    • Screen 1 : A box that says "Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon." Press the Ctrl key, the Alt key, and the Delete key all at the same time and you will get to Screen 2.
    • Screen 2 : A box that says "If you are an authorized user and cannot logon please see one of the tech's in the lab."  Click the "OK" button to get to Screen 3.
    • Screen 3 : A box that asks for  User Name , Password , and Domain. This is the log-on screen.

  2. At the log-on screen , you will be asked to enter a User Name and Password . If you have forgotten your User Name and/or Password , or you don't know what they are, then you will have to speak to a Lab Technician. The Domain should be filled in already with the word: "CWRU_MSASS." It is very important to leave the Domain set to "CWRU_MSASS" because you will not be able to log on otherwise.

  3. After the log-on screen you will be presented with one or more other startup screens. On each startup screen that you see after logon you do not need to change anything, just click on the "OK" or "Close" buttons.

  4. Windows NT displays a "Welcome Screen" at startup, if you do not want to see the welcome screen again uncheck the little box that says "Show this Welcome Screen next time you start Windows NT" and then click on the "Close" button. Note: this feature will only work for the computer you are currently working on. If you change computers you will need to uncheck the box on the new computer as well.

Please remember to log out before leaving the computer. You are responsible for the computer you are logged in on.

Log-Out Procedure

To log out of the Lab computers follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs that are running. Although Windows will actually do this for you, it is recomended to go ahead and close them anyway to prevent loss of data.

  2. Click on the "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. (Note: if you have moved the task bar to some other edge of your screen, the "Start" button will be at the top or left most location on the taskbar.) If you cannot see the "Start" button or the taskbar, press and hold the Crtl key, press the Esc key, and then release both keys.

  3. The Start Menu will appear, choose "Shut down" (the last option).

  4. The screen will go dark and the box titled "Shut Down Windows" will appear. Make sure that the "Close all programs and logon as a different user?" option is selected, and click on the "Yes" button.

  5. At this point you are logged out; however, it is a good idea to wait until you can see a box that says "Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to log on." before you walk away.
