Keyword Searching in a Research Database

In the following tutorial you will view a demonstration of keyword search in SocINDEX, which many of you will use at the Mandel School. If you have used Academic Search Complete or another EBSCOhost database, the look of the database will be familiar. You will also learn how to download, email, and generate an APA citation for any articles of your choice.

After watching the video, try a search in SocINDEX. You can either duplicate the one demonstrated in the tutorial or try your own topic. Please make sure you’re using VPN if you’re off campus or CaseWireless if using a laptop on campus.

What about other research databases? Won’t they look different?

Yes. But once you’ve learned the basics, it will be like driving a borrowed car. You know that there’s a switch to turn on the lights or the radio—you just need to locate the controls. Even though they may look different, research databases have similar features. Check for help screens or ask a librarian for assistance.
