The Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS), Case Western Reserve University, is
soliciting applications for the Dr. Semi J. and Ruth W. Begun Professor in Violence
Prevention. The position involves primary responsibility for leading the Begun Center for
Violence Prevention Research and Education, with secondary responsibility for teaching and service
in the Master's and Doctoral programs. The goals of the Begun Center include:
- Forming interdisciplinary academic partnerships to research and analyze the causes and effects
of violent behavior.
- Combining advanced research methods and state-of-the-art technology to create a system of
identifying "at-risk" populations.
- Establishing active networks among parents, educators and key community constituencies so as to
effectively intervene in the cycle of violence.
- Building on existing interventions and curricula that address the persistent and emerging
social stressors associated with youth violence.
The Professorship will be co-terminus with the Directorship of the Begun
Center. Requirements will include a Ph.D. in Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, or a
related social science. A master's degree in social work with community-based research and
administrative experience is preferred. The Director will lead and manage all Center
activities, including research, training, advocacy, and technical assistance. Candidates
should possess a record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured
appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor. The Director will be responsible
for securing ongoing funding for the center's programs and initiatives.
The Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences currently offers Master's and Doctoral degrees
to over 300 students. We offer joint degrees between social work and the disciplines of
bioethics, law, nonprofit management, and management. MSASS faculty is multidisciplinary
representing professions such as social work, psychology, sociology, and public health. A
number of MSASS faculty hold secondary appointments with other departments and faculty have
collaborative projects with other departments. The School has a long history of community and
agency-based research with the center and institutes having major roles in these initiatives, such
as the Center on Urban Poverty and Social Change/Community Development, Center on Substance Abuse
and Mental Illness, and the Center on Interventions for Children and Families.
