Philip Safford is Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Associate Director of Teacher Licensure at
CaseWestern Reserve University. He serves on the Case Teacher Education Executive Committee
and was formerly Senior Consultant to the Schubert Center for Child Development. He received
his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, in 1967 in Education and Psychology. In 1967 he
joined CWRU's former Education Department, where he inaugurated a federally funded graduate
training program in early childhood intervention and education. From 1974-97 he was a member
of the special education faculty at Kent State University where he is Emeritus Professor and
the1997 President's Medal recipient. At Kent State he chaired the Department of Special Education,
established an interdisciplinary graduate training program in early intervention/early childhood
special education, and was co-founder of the Family Child Learning Center, a research, training,
and service agency administered collaboratively by KSU and Children's Hospital Medical Center of
Akron. His major publications include A History of Childhood and Disability (with Elizabeth
Safford); Integrated Teaching in Early Childhood; Human Diversity in Education, (with Kenneth
Cushner and Averil McClelland, now in its fourth edition, and other books and professional journal
articles. His recent research includes a qualitative study of Day Care Plus (with Linda
Rogers) and Evaluation of the Cuyahoga County Early Childhood Mental Health Pilot. Dr.
Safford serves on several advisory and working committees associated with Cuyahoga County Help Me
Grow.
