It is with much sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our distinguished alumni and Visiting Committee members, Fannie Belle Johnson-Baxter, MSSA 1973, who was a leader in Cleveland in the field of school-based social work. During her impactful career, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services, Beech Brook, Murtis H. Taylor Human Service Center, Applewood Centers, the YWCA of Greater Cleveland, and was interim director of Continued Life.
“Fannie was a true social work leader through and through, and a positive individual whom everyone wanted to be around,” remembers Dean Grover “Cleve” Gilmore. “We are grateful to have had her service on our Visiting Committee and are extremely proud to call her one of our alumni. She will be missed dearly by us at the Mandel School and the many other people who loved her.”
Fannie was interred in a recent private ceremony held by her family. Her dear friend and fellow Visiting Committee member, Paula Atwood, has been working with Fannie’s family to plan a celebration of her life, which will be held on Saturday, January 10, at 2:00pm at the Cleveland State University Student Services Center (3rd floor). All who would like to attend and remember Fannie are welcome.
