Dual Social Work and Management of Nonprofit Organizations


Program Description

The Dual Degree program offered by MSASS and the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations is designed for individuals without previous graduate training in social work or management who have set their sights on becoming managers of human services organizations. Students may pursue direct practice or the macro concentration in the M.S.S.A. degree.

M.S.S.A./M.N.O. students in micro and macro concentrations receive MSASS credit for nine hours of work taken in the Mandel Center's program. Those courses are:

  • MAND 405 Ethics and Professionalism for Nonprofit Leaders
  • MAND 406 Nonprofit Public Policy andAdvocacy
  • MAND 408 Philanthropic Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations

M.S.S.A./M.N.O. students in the macro concentration receive three hours of credit from the Mandel Center for SSBT 534 Organizational Theory taken at MSASS.

In addition, MSASS students must take SSWM 541 Attracting Governmental, Foundation, and Corporate Support. In all, M.S.S.A./M.N.O. students are required to take 42-45 credits of M.N.O. courses and 36 academic and 15 field work credits of M.S.S.A. courses.

Students beginning their studies in the M.S.S.A. program must apply to the M.N.O. program prior to completing 16 credits of MSASS courses. Students beginning their course work at the Mandel Center must apply to the Mandel School before completing 15 credits of Mandel Center courses. Students must finish one complete year in either the M.S.S.A. or M.N.O. program (in either order) before they can mix courses from both programs. Students should anticipate 3-1/2 years of study to complete this dual degree. Students must receive the M.S.S.A. and M.N.O. degrees simultaneously to receive the double counted credits for course work described here. M.S.S.A./M.N.O. students continue to register at their initial school of enrollment throughout the dual program.

Master of Science in Social Administration/Certificate in Nonprofit Management (M.S.S.A./C.N.M.)

Students in the M.S.S.A. program who wish to obtain a certificate in nonprofit management can take advantage of a specialized program of study offered by the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations. To obtain the certificate, students must complete all course requirements for the M.S.S.A. degree. They must also complete a minimum of 15 credit hours (5 courses) in courses approved by the Mandel Center as well as attend all meetings of the Nonprofit Leadership Dialogues series. At least 9 of the 15 credit hours (3 courses) may be taken as free electives in the student?~@ MSASS concentration and be double counted toward the certificate.
