Why social work?
"I began my career teaching in the Virginia public schools. I move to
California, where I went to work for the California Park Service. In 2002, I accepted a
job with the Peace Corps, where I worked in Kenya, Bangladesh and Suriname developing in-country
programs and providing staff support to volunteers. Two years ago, I moved to Cleveland to
take care of my mother. Networking in the care-giving community led me to MSASS. I am
now specializing in gerontology and end of life issues, particularly closing the gap between the
medical establishment and the families who have to deal with them. I have always been
committed to the principles of social justice, environmental justice, and self-determination.
Especially for someone like me (who has a history of multiple careers), all roads seem to have lead
me to social work."
