The groundbreaking work of our students and faculty would not be possible without the support of our school’s staff. Each year, we celebrate them at the MSASSy Awards, an afternoon reception that includes special honors given to a select few on staff who are nominated by their peers and the faculty.
The highest MSASSy Award is the B. Lenora Benson Award of Excellence, established by and named for Mrs. Benson, who worked at Case Western Reserve for more than 30 years, managed the Mandel School’s finance department for a decade, and attended the reception to personally present the award.
On January 20, the 2016 B. Lenora Benson Award of Excellence was presented to Crystal Smith, Office Manager at the Center for Evidence-Based Practices: “A steady presence in a busy organization with multiple and changing needs, Crystal coordinates dozens of events and materials every month. Over the course of her tenure, her department has doubled in size and the workload has grown exponentially. Her work is integral to the mission and reputation of the Mandel School. She coordinated eleven state-wide conferences for an average of 300 participants and nearly 48 workshops. In addition to their normal duties, they stepped up when their center had no financial manager for nine months. She goes above and beyond with energy and grace. It would be hard to imagine the Center for Evidence Based Practices without her.”
The 2016 MSASSy Recognition Awards were presented by Dean Grover “Cleve” Gilmore to:
Kristen Kirchgesler, Reference and Instruction Librarian: “She is a tireless ambassador for new and returning students. Her commitment to teamwork, dedication to students and quick wit make them an exemplary employee. Kristen is always ready to help faculty. Her positive attitude and warm smile are a welcome sight for anyone entering the Harris Library.”
Laura Overman, Research Assistant at the Begun Center: “She is a valuable asset to the school because of her years of experience, which allowed her to jump into various projects right away with minimal training. Laura is a team player up for anything that needs to be done. She is frequently praised by the research investigators with whom she collaborates.”
Kathi Overmier Gant, Field Faculty Advisor and Student Student Success Coach: “She has a steadfast commitment to the students, faculty and staff of the school. Calm and collected in the face of challenge, Kathi is always there when needed, organizing and communicating clearly and diplomatically. Her efforts are noticed inside and outside of her own department. She is a tremendous asset to the students and school.”
Richard Sigg, Director of Recruitment and Admissions: “He keeps his cool under pressure. Despite staffing issues and many challenges, he gets things done and does it with a pleasant attitude. Always willing to help, Richard presents our school and programs in their best light to prospective students. He stepped up and worked hard to make our Admissions department what it is today.”
In addition, the Institutional Advancement Team received a special recognition for their dedication, commitment and contributions to the Mandel School Centennial. Congratulations to the whole team — Tracey Bradnan, Nada DiFranco, Nora Hennessy, Marianne Lax, Maria Sharron, and Edna Wade.
This years’ awards committee members included: Karen Powers, Debbie Morris, Pat Martin, Marie Vibbert, Melissa Van, Scott Wilkes and Craig Zullig.
